ESTER Biotech

Bringing the dead back to life, a theme that runs like a silver thread through the story of ESTER Biotech. It all began in a Leipzig graveyard, where the founders unearthed their high-performance enzyme, a true biotech “mummy.” Today, this discovery is resurrecting plastics, transforming discarded materials into virgin-grade resources and giving them a second life.

Founded by a team of experienced biochemists with strong business acumen, ESTER Biotech is driven by the vision of a circular future, one where materials are continuously reincarnated, staying alive in endless lifecycles and contributing to a sustainable, biodegradable world.

The problem ESTER Biotech is solving is the growing global plastic waste crisis and the inefficiency of current recycling methods. Traditional mechanical recycling downgrades material quality, and chemical recycling is often costly and energy intensive. ESTER Biotech bridges this gap by developing tailor-made enzymes that can selectively and efficiently break down plastics such as PET, PLA, or PBS into their building blocks under mild, environmentally friendly conditions. These can then be reassembled into virgin-quality materials, eliminating waste, reducing fossil dependency, and enabling true circularity in the plastics industry.
